a church without walls

Years ago in Montgomery, Alabama, Henry was doing street ministry.

Standing on the side of the road holding a sign that said:

“Come pray with me.”

Across the street, a woman working at a gas station saw him.

She walked across four lanes of traffic to reach him.

Henry thought she might confront him.

Instead she said:

“Can you pray for my sister?”

They stood there in the middle of the boulevard holding hands and praying.

Before she left, Henry told her:

“Maybe you could visit one of the local churches and find help for your sister.”

She replied:

“No… they don’t receive my type.”

That moment stayed with us.

A woman felt more comfortable crossing traffic to pray with a stranger…

…than walking into a church.

That’s when we realized something.

There are millions of people who feel like they don’t belong anywhere.

So we built a church without walls.
